3D PEN CREATIONS: Shirley Cadmus, recipient, NORTH CAROLINA ARTS COUNCIL ARTIST SUPPORT GRANT 2020-2021
With tremendous gratitude to the NORTH CAROLINA ARTS COUNCIL, YADKIN AND CASWELL COUNTY ARTS COUNCILS.
This grant came at the perfect time. The fear and anxiety brought on by COVID -19 had me doubting my very existence and need to create more art.
It brought about a sense of pride, assurance and motivation to keep working!
I will share the results with you below:
What led me to explore this new artist’ tool and medium? After many years working in clay, mixing clay and glazes, building and firing RAKU and a wood burning kiln, breathing in all the toxins, I reached a point of not being able to breathe. I gave up my long time clay work having gotten “the bug” back in the late sixties.
My sister happened to see a commercial advertising this new tool and the use of plant based filaments. She gave me a 3D Pen set for Christmas that year. It was a total surprise and immediately I started experimenting. It took a while to catch on, but soon was able to find my way, to create the forms I loved to create in clay-but even bigger!!
Covid restrictions actually provided extra time to stay in and create. I want to share some of the results with you. Keep in mind, the largest ones took 5-7 months to complete, the pens are not cheap and neither are the wide variety of filaments.
I kept a small area in the gallery as a place to work so others could watch and ask Questions. Some went on to buy a a pen for themselves
